What is an anxiety disorder?

An anxiety disorder is a condition in which you experience excessive worry, fear, and nervousness. Anxiety disorders can occur in different forms, including generalized anxiety disorder (the most common), panic disorder, phobia-related disorders, and social anxiety disorder.

What are the signs of an anxiety disorder?

Symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder often include:

  • Irritability
  • Difficulty reining in your worry
  • Being quickly fatigued
  • Poor concentration
  • Stomach cramps
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia

These feelings are common in all anxiety disorders, although the specific situations around those feelings may differ. For example, people with phobia-related disorders may only experience powerful anxiety related to their particular phobia. Your anxiety may only happen when interacting with or thinking about a phobia like flying, blood, or spiders.

The intensity and frequency of the symptoms can vary as well. An example is panic disorder, in which symptoms are extremely severe and appear suddenly (a panic attack). Panic disorder can be very debilitating because many people who experience it spend a lot of time trying to prevent and avoid attacks.

Up to 60% of people with anxiety also experience depression.

How are anxiety disorders treated?

Raelin Bright Wellness takes an integrative (holistic) whole-person approach to anxiety treatment. The psychiatric mental health provider typically uses a two-part approach with customized adjustments along the way to ensure you get the best possible treatment. Treatment includes:

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy, or talk therapy, can help you identify the factors that contribute to or cause your anxiety and give you tools to better manage them. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is generally one of the best specific approaches for anxiety.

All psychotherapy occurs through telepsychiatry, in which you and the psychiatric mental health provider meet through teleconferencing, so you never have to visit an office or leave your home.

Medication management

Medication management helps you manage the things you can’t control. For example, if your brain chemistry and genetics predispose you to anxiety or other mental health disorders, medication can correct imbalances and help you feel better.

The psychiatric mental health provider uses genetic testing (a simple saliva test you can take at home) to determine which specific medications you’ll respond to best. Genetic testing helps her determine the ideal dosage, eliminating the guesswork usually involved in medication management, which means you can feel better faster.

Raelin Bright Wellness offers customized anxiety psychotherapy and medication management from the privacy of your own home. Call the office or book your appointment online now.
